Welcome Message

It is with great pleasure that I welcome each one of you to the next exciting phase of your life. Our focus is to inspire you as independent learners, leaders and/or professionals, to support you in reaching your full potential and to celebrate your success as individuals and not just as learners. So welcome to the BCU family and your BSc (Hons) Economics course.

The BSc (Hons) Economics course will encourage, challenge and broaden your understanding of economic and business frameworks within which organisations operate as well as focus on various national and global economic conditions that affect the way that different kinds of businesses make decisions. We are particularly proud to be among the few courses that offer a plurality of approaches in economics beyond the mainstream schools of thought. We are also proud that BSc (Hons) Economics is an applied course with focus on real life business and economic situations.

Please take advantage of the induction week to get to know your support eco-system for the next three years – your department, your academic and administration team, your peers and the various BCU student-support centres. Please make sure that you get involved with all the activities that will take place during Welcome Week.

As soon as you enrol you will be able to access our virtual learning environment, Moodle. Please do log onto this and take part in the activities that are there to help you get off to a flying start on your course and get to know your course colleagues before you arrive on campus. I promise we’re all very friendly and are here to support you. Remember, everyone is in the same boat!

Of all the people/teams that are here to support you, your Personal Tutor is a key person. Your personal tutor is a member of staff whose role is to advice and support throughout your time at university; they will be reaching out to you so please get to know them quickly.

Once again, I am extremely happy to welcome you to Birmingham City University and look forward to meeting each one of you. I wish you the very best!

Course Location

Supporting your transition

During Welcome Week, you’ll get to meet our Student Ambassadors as soon as you walk onto campus. They’ll be there to support you with finding your Student Support Centre, collecting your ID card and guiding you in the right direction, and for a friendly hello!

First day on Campus

We look forward to welcoming you to Birmingham City University!

You must have your ID card visible at all times when on campus, so if you have received yours before your first day, ensure you bring this with you. If you enrolled late you will need to collect one on campus during your first few days. Please remember that your ID card is for your use only. You must never let anyone else use it.

To complete your enrolment, you will need the following:

  • Passport (or other form of photo ID if you are a UK/EU student)
  • Original qualification documents if applicable (you will be emailed a list of the documents we need to see once you have completed your online enrolment)
  • Visa (international students only)

What else? The rest is up to you! You will find a shop, café, pub, computer access and water fountains on campus, but we do recommend you bring the following on the first day:

  • Laptop, if you have one
  • Notepad and pen
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Snack
  • Money

And remember, the weather in Birmingham can be changeable!
