Welcome Message

I am delighted to welcome you to the MSc Applied Child Psychology course at Birmingham City University. You'll find Psychology on the 3rd floor of the Curzon Building, and we can’t wait to see you on campus soon!

The MSc Applied Child Psychology course offers specific, in-depth study of child psychology across a range of disciplines and settings. Modules allow you to explore and develop knowledge of research methods in child psychology; cognitive, social, emotional, physical and neurological development; educational psychology; and clinical child psychology. You will also explore typical and atypical development and consider issues and approaches regarding inclusivity and diversity.

Your course induction during Welcome Week is super important – it’s your opportunity to settle in, learn about the university, Psychology and the course you’re about to begin, meet your lecturers and classmates, and prepare for the start of your course. There will also be lots of activities and events on campus during Welcome Week for you to join in with.

Once you enrol, you’ll be able to access Moodle, our virtual learning environment. On the course Moodle page, you will find general information about your course and the university. Your course induction slides will be available here, too! Check out your individual module Moodle pages for information about your modules, lectures, seminars, workshops and assessments.

We will also assign you a Personal Tutor from the course team who is here to help, whether you have questions, concerns, or just need some guidance. They’ll be a key contact throughout your time on the course, so it’s worth getting to know them early on.

You’re now part of the BCU Psychology community, and we’re looking forward to working with you to help you succeed. Want to stay in the loop? Follow us on X (@BCU_Psychology) for updates and insights.

We can’t wait to meet you and welcome you properly—this is going to be a great experience!

Supporting your transition

During Welcome Week, you’ll get to meet our Student Ambassadors as soon as you walk onto campus. They’ll be there to support you with finding your Student Support Centre, collecting your ID card and guiding you in the right direction, and for a friendly hello!

First day on Campus

We look forward to welcoming you to Birmingham City University!

You must have your ID card visible at all times when on campus, so if you have received yours before your first day, ensure you bring this with you. If you enrolled late you will need to collect one on campus during your first few days. Please remember that your ID card is for your use only. You must never let anyone else use it.

To complete your enrolment, you will need the following:

  • Passport (or other form of photo ID if you are a UK/EU student)
  • Original qualification documents if applicable (you will be emailed a list of the documents we need to see once you have completed your online enrolment)
  • Visa (international students only)

What else? The rest is up to you! You will find a shop, café, pub, computer access and water fountains on campus, but we do recommend you bring the following on the first day:

  • Laptop, if you have one
  • Notepad and pen
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Snack
  • Money

And remember, the weather in Birmingham can be changeable!
