Dr Samuel Burgum

Sam Burgum 100x150

Lecturer in Sociology

School of Social Sciences

Sam joined BCU in September 2020, where he leads and teaches on modules across Sociology. Drawing from critical pedagogy, he aims to foster an environment where students are active participants in learning - instead of passive consumers - and where education is a ‘practice of freedom’ (bell hooks).

In his research, Sam also takes an approach – in design and dissemination - which aims to be mutually beneficial for both researchers and participating communities or partners. Sam became an academic in order to produce knowledge and understanding that can change our society for the better, particularly for those who suffer on the margins.
