Hassan Hussain

Hassan completed his first class BA (Hons) in English at Birmingham City University (2015) before securing a scholarship to complete a Master of Arts at the University of Warwick (2016). He soon returned to Birmingham City University to begin his STEAM-funded PhD project, researching the de/construction of gay men in twenty-first century British theatre. He was also employed as a Research Assistant for the PGR Studio to actively shape doctoral provision in the Faculty by contributing to research that directly relates to the development of the doctoral community, as well as to participate in projects, conferences and events as part of, and informed by, this research. His own research focuses largely on de/construction(s) of identity on stage, with a particular focus on gender, sex and sexuality. His research interests influence his playwriting and directing.

Hassan has directed/co-directed a range of plays, often influenced by post-structuralist philosophy and performance theory. Post PhD, his aims are to further his research in the fields of Contemporary British Theatre and Queer Theory. Drawing from his research, Hassan wants to write/direct theatre in Birmingham, thus creating a dialogue between his research and practice as a Researcher, Director and Playwright.
