On April 26, 2023, Dr Alan Ma, Lecturer in Law at BCU, delivered an evening lecture on expert evidence in international arbitration at Warwick University. The lecture was co-organised by the Midlands branch of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) and the West Midlands branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb).

Dr Ma, who is qualified in engineering, law and IT, addressed the adoption of robust and pragmatic approaches to providing expert evidence in international arbitration. The lecture also explored how these approaches can be extended in the context of the ever-growing popularity of arbitration in the digital era.

International arbitration

International arbitration is a method of dispute resolution whereby the parties agree to have their dispute resolved by one or more private individuals. The role of digital technology in enhancing the arbitration process was one of the focal points of the lecture.

Dr Ma’s participation contributed to the ongoing knowledge exchange between BCU and professional bodies, providing partners with access to current industry practices and enhancing their understanding of current developments in the field. By working closely with professional bodies, BCU can influence industry practices and provide expert opinions and research findings on arbitration.
