Thoughts on International Multiple Birth Awareness week

As International Multiple Birth Awareness week draws to a close, Professor Elizabeth Bailey reflects on what this week has meant.

Throughout this week we have seen content shared and issues highlighted from the International Multiple Birth community across the world. Much of the information shared has centred on raising awareness of the unique experiences and needs of twins, triplets and higher order multiples. It appears all areas of the globe agree on the need for more understanding and recognition of the specific risks that multiple birth families face. We have seen examples of experiences shared by multiple birth parents and families, as well as researchers, campaigners and experts. Many of the voices heard are calling for improved recognition across policy, research and professional support and education.

A key document shared and discussed was the Declaration of Rights of Twins and Higher Order Multiples, which outlines the specific protection that should be offered to twins and multiples to ensure they are free to enjoy the same rights as any individual but also outlines a statement of needs across pregnancy and birth care, early years development, through to determining individuality and ethical research inclusion. This important benchmark serves as an additional reminder of where the multiple birth community can come together for greater awareness, understanding and influence.

This week has also allowed our team at the EBMBC to reflect on how different elements of our work link to the daily focus of #IMBAW. I know we have greatly appreciated the opportunity to share and connect with the multiple birth community and learn from their varied projects, research, expertise and lived experience. This conversation will continue throughout the year as working for improvements in multiple birth wellbeing is part of our key vision and aims. This week has been a lovely opportunity to reflect and re-energise that vision in connection with all those equally motivated and we are reminded of the great strength that comes from shared values and a global community.
