VisCom Pratt Institute New York Fashion Week 2017

A group of 40 VisCom students took part in a New York Fashion Week photoshoot this February, directing and shooting a fashion lookbook for the prestigious Pratt Institute. The opportunity was made possible through one of our visiting lecturer’s links to the Institute, enabling our students to collaborate with top models and professional New York hair and make-up artists to create the images, which have been described by the Pratt Institute as “fantastic” and “dreamy”.

Creating a series of exciting lookbook images to promote the institute’s BFA Fashion Design course was no mean feat and the group gained three full days of hands on shooting experience, a great addition to everybody’s portfolio. The Pratt Institute’s response to the finished images has been overwhelmingly positive and they are now already looking to further the relationship with our University, hopefully inviting more students back for another shoot next year!

The School of Visual Communications runs a study trip to New York each year, open to all VisCom students across all years and courses, providing studio work experience and gallery visits in the iconic city. This year’s trip was of particular significance due to the reputation and reach of the project and the fact that it took place during New York Fashion Week – with students photographing top models rushing to and from other bookings at top fashion houses! Another new perspective was added to the trip this year as for the first time VisCom students were joined by 20 students from the BA (Hons) Fashion Business and Promotion course, enabling collaboration between the two disciplines on the shoot.

Despite the demands of their busy days, students found time after the shoots to make the most of their time in New York, with gallery visits to institutes such as the MoMA and of course, a trip to the top of the Empire State Building!

We’re always on the lookout for the next international study trip and opportunity for students to widen experience, and we also run study exchanges with our partner universities. Speak to your personal tutor for further information.
