Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece Pulp Fiction will be screened at a special event marking the start of a festival of arts, design and innovation, after being named as Birmingham’s favourite 90s film.
The cult classic will be shown on 10 June at Birmingham City University’s Auditorium – formerly the Giant Screen at Millennium Point – after coming out on top of a 10-strong shortlist of movies.
Nearly 500 votes were cast by members of the public to whittle down the nominees made up of the highest grossing, multi-award-winning and most culturally significant films of the decade.
The Giant Screen has been converted to serve as a lecture theatre since closing last year but will host a film screening for the first time in nearly 18 months to kick-off Inspired Festival which will feature a series of events across the University’s campuses.
The Festival, which runs from 11 to 26 June, showcases the talent of the University’s final year students in disciplines such as film, art, architecture and photography.
Tickets for the opening event are priced at £4 and include a meal, drink and bag of popcorn.
Samantha Thodhlana, Birmingham City University’s Project Manager for Inspired Festival, said: “After two weeks and a closely fought vote, Pulp Fiction has been named as Birmingham’s favourite 90s film.
“Hopefully this screening, and the festival itself, will provide an extra source of inspiration for our current and future students and graduates as well as people of the West Midlands.”
Tarantino’s classic was nominated for seven Academy Awards, taking away the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay at the 1995 ceremony.
James Cameron’s romantic epic Titanic was the runner up in the voting, finishing ahead of the likes of Forrest Gump, Terminator 2, Clueless and the Lion King.
During the Inspired Festival the public will be given the opportunity to take part in a series of workshops focused on enhancing creativity, and all events and activities will be showcased using the hashtag #BCUinspired.
Events will be held at the University’s city centre campus in Birmingham’s Eastside as well as Birmingham School of Jewellery and Birmingham School of Art.
