VisCom trips

From global trips to visits to local and regional design agencies and theatres, we’re always on the move to make sure you can experience as much of the creative industry as you can before you graduate.

New York City

This year marks the 20th anniversary of BCU running field trips to New York, and earlier this month 50 Visual Communication students from all courses and years went to Manhattan for five days.

Students enjoyed the sights and sounds of the city that never sleeps, including watching filming in uptown Brooklyn, visiting ground-breaking work in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), re-enacting scenes from the hit TV series ‘Friends’, heading down to Central Park with their sketch pads and watching a Broadway show.

Professor of Visual Communication Andrew Kulman said:

Berlin

During our last trip to Berlin students checked out tourist hot spots such as Brandenburg Gate, the Jewish Museum and Eastside Gallery, as well an alternative Berlin street art tour and Mauerpark’s flea market for second-hand treasures.

They also went on a tour of the Buchstabenmuseum which was a great way for them to explore typography, an essential part of visual communication. The Buchstabenmuseum, also known as the Museum of Letters, is the first museum in the world to collect letterforms from public spaces and display them as part of urban history. The unique collection displays more than 1000 examples of letters, logos and signs, with many coming from the Berlin cityscape.

The trip concluded with a studio visit and talk from prolific graphic artist and author of ‘Black & White’ and ‘Protest Stencil Toolkit’, Patrick Thomas. Patrick spoke to students about his journey and his practice, which has seen him exhibit his limited-edition works across five continents.

Agency visits, conferences and more

There are also plenty of opportunities for students to visit local and regional agencies and galleries and attend specialist conferences. Recent visits have included Design Manchester, McCann London, Iron House and The REP to name a few!
