University wins prestigious jewellery prize

Birmingham City University’s Design for Industry jewellery course has been recognised as one of the best jewellery courses in the UK.

The one-year Jewellery and Silversmithing - Design for Industry course won the ‘Best jewellery course provider’ prize at International Jewellery London’s Leading Lights Awards.

International Jewellery London enjoys a heritage of showcasing the best of luxury materials, design and craftsmanship, with the Leading Lights Awards celebrating the innovation of jewellery makers.

Andrew Howard, lecturer in Jewellery and Silversmithing – Design for Industry at Birmingham City University, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to have received this award.

“The judges stated that the level of praise and outstanding achievement from the submitted testimonials truly proved the School of Jewellery's - Design for Industry course to be the clear and obvious winner.

“The voting was unanimous which really gave the team a boost.  We look forward to defending our new title at next year’s awards!”

The course at Birmingham City University’s School of Jewellery sees students working on live projects and CAD software packages to design, develop and launch new product ranges.

Students also benefit from visits to trade fairs, exhibitions and company tours to develop an understanding of commercial manufacturing environments and to explore job roles in the jewellery trade.

Birmingham City University Jewellery and Objects student Bingjie Zhao was also honoured at International Jewellery London with an award for her ring designs.
