A Birmingham City University academic who contributed to a new book on the future and purposes of planning is being launched in Parliament today (26 November) by Shadow Minister for Planning, Roberta Blackman-Woods MP.

The contributions in ‘New Directions in Planning: Beyond Localism’ have been produced by a wide range of commentators with expertise in and engagement with planning and the planning system.

Alister Scott, Professor of Environmental and Spatial Planning at Birmingham City University, has contributed a chapter highlighting the importance of rediscovering the urban-rural fringe and the opportunities that such insights can have on shaping the future direction of England’s planning system.

A number of contributors also highlight how a new ‘pro-localist’ approach should see the community as an essential partner in the delivery of planned and sustainable economic development.

Commenting on the book which forms part of a Labour Party review of planning policy, Professor Scott said: “Such a book is overdue to reflect a sense of boldness and vision for the planning profession which appears to have lost its soul and confidence.”

Other contributors to the book include academics from the social sciences and built environment sectors from Northumbria University, Oxford Brookes University and the Royal Institute of British Architects.
