Birmingham City University is delighted to welcome award-winning author and journalist, Sathnam Sanghera to the University’s Creative Writing Summer Show on Wednesday 24 June.

Born and raised in the West Midlands, Sathnam is known for his book Marriage Material: A Novel, which was shortlisted for the 2014 South Bank Sky Arts Award and is now being developed into a multi-part TV drama with Kudos Productions.

Fellow author Jonathan Coe said that “whether he’s writing autobiography or fiction, Sathnam is busy carving out his own literary niche – in the multicultural West Midlands – which he explores with incredible grace, generosity and humour.”

The Creative Writing Summer Show will celebrate the art of the written word, with poetry and short story readings from the Institute of Creative and Critical Writing’s staff and students, performed in Birmingham Conservatoire’s Recital Hall.

Birmingham City University lecturer Anna Lawrence says: “We’re very excited to be welcoming Sathnam Sanghera as our guest speaker to the show this year. It is a fantastic opportunity for our students to hear first-hand from such an acclaimed writer and be inspired by Sathnam’s literary experiences.”

The event has been organised by the University’s Institute of Creative and Critical Writing, and coincides with the launch of the students’ 2015 creative writing anthology Alone Together. The anthology offers a collection of professional creative writing pieces from students and staff of the school, to highlight the excellent work the school produces each year.
