Music students in the city will be striking the right note after a major investment has created new rehearsal rooms for residents of Campus Living Villages (CLV) student accommodation.
Unveiled on Thursday 4 June by the Principal of Birmingham Conservatoire, David Saint, a major investment of £450,000 has created two group rehearsal rooms and ten individual practice studios. Funded and delivered by the University’s student accommodation provider CLV, the rehearsal rooms are furnished with five baby grand pianos, two grand pianos and one keyboard.
David Saint, Principal Birmingham Conservatoire, said: "We have been inspiring musicians since 1886 and as we approach our 130th year of training, we need to maintain the standards of excellence that our students expect. Our continuous improvement in facilities further bolsters the city's position as a major centre for classical music performance."
Gary Clarke, Campus Living Villages' Chief Executive Officer explained: "We are thrilled to deliver first-rate music facilities that will significantly enhance the residential experience of those using them. We are focused on providing the best in student experience at all our accommodation and are increasingly looking at innovative ways to creative living and learning communities in collaboration with our university partners."
Of the 600 students who live at CLV, 100 are studying at Birmingham Conservatoire. The suite of music rooms is conveniently located on the ground floor of their accommodation block and will help bridge the gap of available rehearsal space, whilst the new Birmingham Conservatoire is being built.
Building work for Birmingham Conservatoire begins in the summer, with a scheduled completion date of 2017.The new £46 million centre will be the first purpose built conservatoire in the UK since 1987.
