Birmingham City University (BCU) has climbed 18 places to 82nd in The Daily Mail University Guide 2027, with the University performing particularly strongly for first-generation students, student support and student experience.
The guide ranks universities across a range of measures, with BCU recording strong results for teaching excellence, student support and student experience. The results reflect the University’s continued focus on improving teaching, supporting students and delivering a positive student experience.
BCU also performs strongly in a number of subject areas, with Music ranked 1st out of 46 universities, Drama 3rd out of 41, and Education 8th out of 50.
The rankings highlight BCU’s STEAM agenda, including its work to reimagine engineering courses and ensure students receive industry-relevant, skills-driven training, with plans to extend this approach across further courses over the next year.
The guide also recognises BCU’s expanded scholarship programme, with hundreds of first-year students set to receive £1,000 scholarships in the next academic year, as well as the University’s significant contribution to Birmingham and the wider West Midlands.
Forty per cent of BCU graduates begin their careers in Birmingham, while 28% of newly qualified teachers and 43% of new nurses across the West Midlands are BCU graduates.
The latest ranking comes just weeks after BCU recorded strong improvements in the National Student Survey (NSS). Based on the average across the survey’s 24 main questions, BCU now ranks in the top third of higher education institutions in the UK.
Vice-Chancellor Professor David Mba said: “This is another strong sign that BCU is moving in the right direction.
“Climbing 18 places in The Daily Mail’s rankings, alongside strong results for student support, student experience and teaching, shows that the improvements we’re making are being felt by our students.
“I’m incredibly proud of the hard work of colleagues across the university. Our Strategy 2030 ambition is clear: to develop the talent for tomorrow and give our students the skills, opportunities and experience they need to succeed.
“We’ll celebrate this progress, but we won’t stand still. There is more to do, and we’re determined to keep improving the experience we offer our students.”
