One of Birmingham's most celebrated artists, Barbara Walker MBE RA, has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Birmingham City University (BCU) - a full-circle moment for an alumna whose colossal portraits have reshaped how Black lives and experiences are seen in British art.
Tackling issues of belonging, power, visibility, and representation, Barbara’s artwork focuses on the lived experience of Black people and their community.
“My artistic practice has always been centred on shining a positive light on groups and communities that might otherwise feel marginalised or overlooked,” said Barbara. “It is about giving them a voice, a presence, and a platform.
“Birmingham, the vibrant city that has been my home and my inspiration, played a pivotal role in shaping many of my early paintings."
Barbara explores ideas of visibility and erasure in her work, producing monumental portraits. A documenter of Black lives, the contemporary stories within her work are fed by Black history and her home of Birmingham.
“Each painting is a heartfelt tribute, a cherished memory, and a vibrant celebration of a community that has given me so much and made me the person, and the artist, I am," she added.
“Art is not a luxury; it is a fundamental human need, a powerful tool for understanding, connection, and change. Its importance is paramount.”
Barbara graduated from the University of Central England, now BCU, in 1996 with a BA in Art and Design.
She describes her path to university as 'unconventional', adding: "I came as a mature student because I had to wait until my children were settled in full-time education before I began my own journey through higher education.
“Once I was settled in art school, I remember thinking: 'This is my moment, this is where I can begin to grow and learn.'”
Nominated for the 2024 Turner Prize, Barbara received the Sky Arts Award for Visual Arts in 2025. In 2019, she was awarded an MBE for services to British Art.
Barbara formally received her Honorary Doctorate at a BCU graduation ceremony at Birmingham's Symphony Hall on Wednesday (29 July).
