As a result of the successful cooperation with the Faculty Health, Education and Life Sciences (HELS), International College of Business and Technology (ICBT), Sri Lanka, offers opportunities to study high quality Level 6 Top-Up programmes in BEng Biomedical Engineering. The first cohort of the Biomedical Engineering graduates, who completed their Top-Up Degree from Birmingham City University, have returned to ICBT on the 30th of June 2017 to participate in the annual workshop on “Personality Development in Career Management” held at the ICBT campus and to share their experiences with current Biomedical Engineering students.
To further enhance essential employability skills of the ICBT students, the workshop was organised by “BioMEng League-2K17” Organizing Committee, which comprised of students from 1st and 2nd year of Biomedical Engineering Program, under the guidance of ICBT staff at Department of Biomedical Engineering, ICBT Campus.
The event provided a platform to interact with the successful ICBT graduates, reassured current students about the relevance of their top-up degree to challenges they were going to face in industry and answered some of the key questions relating their future career. As a result, the students felt motivated and uplifted about the qualification that they were going to achieve in near future. They will also not hesitate to recommend the On-going Biomedical Engineering Program to future prospective students, interested in exploring this new adventure in the careful hands of ICBT and BCU.

In addition, the event:
- Prepared graduates for a career in biomedical engineering or a related field (e.g. other engineering disciplines, medicine, law, etc.) and provided them the necessary skills to obtain leadership position.
- Prepared graduates to use modern engineering tools for practice and/or pursuit of advanced degrees
- Instilled in graduates the importance of a life-long learning in a rapidly changing global community.
Partnership between HELS and ICBT is a prime example of an international cooperation that is aiming to fulfil the mission of the University’s refreshed Strategic Plan for 2022: ‘to transform the prospects of individuals, organisations and society through excellence in practice-based education, research and knowledge exchange’.
Dr. Vivek Padmanaabhan Indramohan of the Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences, who is the Academic Advisor and Overseas Link Tutor for BEng Biomedical Engineering, said the following about HELS’ cooperation with ICBT:
“An academic advisor / link-tutor role is an extremely challenging role, especially when you are providing appropriate academic support to overseas partners while fulfilling various day-to-day responsibilities here at BCU. I have immense pleasure in reflecting on remarkable verbal feedbacks obtained from all students on this programme highlighting the HELS-BCU collaborative partnership with ICBT. Having been successful with two cohorts, the third cohort of students are on board and such annual workshops initiated by staff members at ICBT with extended support from our Alumni is a true example of student engagement or partnership working to enhance various graduate employability skills”.
