Students help Selfridges tackle ‘throw away’ culture
University NewsLast updated 15 September 2023
A mammoth seven-foot sculpture made entirely of repurposed denim designed by Fashion & Textiles students at Birmingham City University (BCU) has been installed at Selfridges Birmingham.
In an effort to tackle ‘throw away’ culture the sculpture is made entirely from reused and recycled denim sourced from vintage stores across the city. The installation named ‘Serene’ is part of Selfridges ‘Worn Again’ campaign.
Ellie Clayton, BA Textile Design and Clanisse Khaw BA Fashion Business and Promotion at BCU were part of the team that brought the ‘Serene’ sculpture to life.
Fellow BCU students Milly Corbett, Ellie Lewis, Kirsty Costa, Tyanne Laylo, Treasa Tran and Hemang Shrestha were also members of the design team each playing a role in manipulating the sourced denim to create the final installation.
The 2023 ‘Serene’ sculpture is not the first collaboration between BCU and Selfridges. In 2021 Fashion & Textile students installed Transcendence an artwork project focused on a desire to escape poor mental health, a craving for natural healing and a heightened connection to nature.
