Sam Coley is the College Academic Lead for Distance and Transnational Education at the Birmingham College of English and Media. He is also Award Leader for the MA Media Production and teaches a range of undergraduate and postgraduate audio production modules.

Coley is a member of the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research, where he investigates the fields of development radio, documentary production and popular music studies.

His experiences as a radio trainer for the BBC World Service Trust in Ethiopia formed the basis of his Masters dissertation, which explored the use of radio in the delivery of educational health messages. His practice-based PhD considered freelance music documentary production in the commercial radio industry.

Sam has written chapters and articles about popular music and radio production for various publications, and his book, Music Documentaries for Radio, was published by Routledge in 2021.

He continues to work as a radio freelancer and was an executive producer of ‘Cities of Sound’, a 12-part music documentary series for the ‘Greatest Hits Radio’ network, supported by the Audio Content Fund. In 2022 and 2023 he initiated and managed a series of online training programmes with Anna University in Chennai India, funded by the British Council.
