Dr Matt Grimes is the Course Director for the BA (Hons) Music Industries and a Senior Lecturer in Music Industries and Radio.

Matt teaches primarily on the BA (Hons) Music Industries course in the Birmingham School of Media, as well as on a range of undergraduate and post-graduate programmes across the Birmingham Institute of Media and English and Faculty of Arts, Design and Media.

Prior to joining the Birmingham School of Media and the Birmingham Centre for Media and Cultural Research (BCMCR) as an academic, Matt worked within the 1980s/90s anarcho/DiY punk scene and dance music scenes, for a number of DiY record labels, as a tour manager and music promoter and events organiser. He has also worked on a number of music festivals including Boomtown Fair, The Big Chill, Shambala and in the Glastonbury Festival production offices for over 10 years.

Matt also worked extensively in the Midlands, Wales and the South West as a freelance radio trainer/producer. He brought radio production to marginalised groups such as Romany and Gypsy Travellers, prison inmates, young adults in rural areas, victims of domestic violence, drug and alcohol dependents, community groups and the long term unemployed. His rationale behind the training is using radio, an accessible and affordable media, as a vehicle for social and personal change, giving a voice to the marginalised, social inclusion, skills acquisition and development, and social/cultural bridge building. He has also previously worked as a sound engineer, an art technician and consultant, and a drummer of various bands that never 'made it'.

He manages internal and external student employability and industry engagement projects and collaborative provision with franchise colleges and external educational providers. He is also an external examiner for a number of universities across the UK.
