Sonya Smith is Deputy Head of the School of Law (Academic Programme Development) at Birmingham City University. Prior to joining the University Sonya was previously a solicitor dealing first of all with family law matters, then moving into employers’ liability and personal injury claims.
Sonya became the CPE/GDL Programme Director and then the Legal Practice Course Programme Director in 2004. Until 2011 she taught Civil Litigation, Advocacy and the Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence elective at postgraduate level.
Sonya became Deputy Head (Academic Programme Development) in 2011 and is now a:
- Member of the Faculty’s Student Experience and Learning and Teaching Committee
- Member of the University’s Graduate + Working Group.
- Member of the Faculty’s Transforming the Curriculum Steering Group
- Member of the Faculty’s Operations Group
Sonya now teaches the Law of Tort, Public Law and Professional Skills and Practice at undergraduate level.
Sonya completed the University’s Masters in Education programme with Distinction in 2014.
Sonya became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in early 2015 and, currently, is undertaking the Professional Doctorate in Education at the University of Nottingham.
