Overview

Our Masters programme gives you the tools and techniques necessary to undertake research at the forefront of your chosen gemmological area.

Based in custom designed facilities within Birmingham’s Assay Office, in the historic Jewellery Quarter, you will have access to equipment more commonly seen in research laboratories, and, through our network of contacts, potential access to a greater range of tools.

This course is open to International students.

What's covered in this course?

This course encourages you to investigate gemmological questions and theories, by way of literature-based peer-reviewed research and practical testing.

You'll be supported throughout your studies by our experienced tutors, with a wealth of knowledge and experience between them - all recognised industry professionals.

As well as learning important skills for your future career development from our practical modules, you’ll learn valuable research techniques and analytical skills, which will stand you in good stead with future potential employers.

You will also benefit from the extensive network of gemmologists through our contacts in various organisations across the globe, including laboratories, museum, auction houses and various other related sectors.

The Masters Gemmology course is a great option to further your scientific understanding of the world of Gemmology whether that be through the use of advanced gemmological equipment or whether that be through the theory of crystallography!

Entry Requirements

We accept a range of qualifications, the most popular of which are detailed below.

Essential requirements (UK Students)

BSc in Gemmology or associated subject (e.g. mineralogy or geology)

If you do not meet all of the essential entry requirements, you will be required to complete a successful interview in order to receive an offer for this course

Extra information for EU/International students

International students must hold a qualification recognised as graduate status and agreed by the Academic Registrar. They must also have appropriate English language skills.

Candidates may be admitted without a first degree via APEL/APL subject to agreement of the Academic Registrar, e.g. high level of educational, industrial, or professional experience.

IELTS 6.0 overall with 5.5 minimum in all bands or its equivalent.

Access to computer equipment

You will require use of a laptop, and most students do prefer to have their own. However, you can borrow a laptop from the university or use one of our shared computer rooms.

Printing

You will receive £5 print credit in each year of your course, available after enrolment.

Field trips

All essential field trips and associated travel costs will be included in your course fees.

Access to Microsoft Office 365

Every student at the University can download a free copy of Microsoft Office 365 to use whilst at university and for 18 months after graduation.

Key software

You will be able to download SPSS and Nvivo to your home computer to support with your studies and research.

Key subscriptions

Subscriptions to key journals and websites are available through our library.

Project materials (mandatory)

This course includes project work that requires you to develop and produce a portfolio or collection. You'll be expected to provide the materials for use in your individual major projects; costs will vary depending on the materials selected.

Clothing and safety equipment (mandatory)

This course requires the purchase of safety equipment in order to use the workshop facilities. A white lab coat is required.

Media consumable items (mandatory)

This course requires the use of consumables, including a USB drive.

Specialist equipment (mandatory)

This course requires the purchase of specialist equipment. You will need basic gemmology equipment (loupe, handheld spectroscope and dichroscope) which is available to buy from Gem-A for approx. £200.

Excess printing (optional)

Once you have spent your £5 credit, additional printing on campus costs from 5p per sheet.

Placement expenses (optional)

If you choose to undertake a placement, you'll need to budget for accommodation and any travel costs you may incur whilst living or working away from home.

Conference attendance (optional)

You may need to cover the costs of attending conferences such as the Scottish Gemmological Association.

You’ll need to submit a personal statement as part of your application for this course. In order to complete this course you must successfully complete all the following CORE modules (totalling 180 credits):

MSc with Professional Placement

In order to complete the MSc Gemmology with Professional Placement course, you must also successfully complete this 60 credit optional module in addition to the core MSc modules

The Masters in Gemmology will be a predominantly self-directed study course, enabling you to follow your own research into your preferred area of gemmology (this can be origin, treatment determination, trends or other such field).

You will be taught valuable research techniques and analytical tools, and trained on the advanced lab-testing equipment housed within our Research Lab.

You will learn of range of skills which will be key to enhancing your future employability.

Specifically you will learn:

Facilities & Staff

Our Facilities

Our Gemmology students are based in new, state-of-the-art premises at Moreton Street in the Jewellery Quarter, within the Assay Office Birmingham building.

The purpose-built workshops are spacious and superbly well-equipped with equipment, samples and books. Within the department, there is access to some of the highest specification of equipment available for gemmological education in the world. Our students also have access to the further advanced equipment housed within the Assay office’s AnchorCert laboratory.

The Research Lab includes a range of spectroscopic analysis equipment, along with the latest diamond screening tools.
