RBC Symphony Orchestra
Conductor Michael Seal
Jordan Ashman Marimba
Copland Fanfare for the Common Man
Torke Mojave
Joan Tower Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman
Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances, Op.45
Join the RBC’s flagship orchestra and CBSO Associate Conductor Michael Seal for an exhilarating concert of music from America.
Copland’s arresting Fanfare for the Common Man finds a perfect counter-balance in Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman by Grammy-award winning American composer Joan Tower, which shares the same scoring and has a theme reminiscent of Copland’s. “A blend of loose-limbed minimalism and feel-good neo-romanticism” is how the Washington Post described Michael Torke’s marimba concerto Mojave, a work inspired by the arid landscape of the Mojave Desert in Nevada. 2022 BBC Young Musician winner and RBC’s own Jordan Ashman is the perfect virtuosic soloist.
Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances have emerged from the shadows of his best known works to become an audience favourite. Melding Russian and modernist influences, autobiographical references and religious chant and, of course, glorious melody, this was his final work and the only one written entirely while he was living in the US.
