John Coltrane 100th Anniversary Concert and Symposium
Thursday
We celebrate the 100th anniversary of John Coltrane's birthday with three differing sets that celebrate his legacy. The concert has been put together by TDE Promotions, Paul Dunmall and John O'Gallagher and will feature three sets:
Set 1 - 6.30pm - Eastside Jazz Club
Jazz students with Paul Dunmall and John O'Gallagher play one of Coltrane's great pieces, Ascension.
Set 2 - 7.45pm - Eastside Jazz Club
A sextet with Paul Dunmall, John O'Gallagher, Sophia Domancich, Caius Williams, Miles Levin and Will Glaser revisit the music of another of Coltrane's great albums, Meditations.
Set 3 - 9pm (approx.) The Lab
A remix of the Meditations set by Andy Woodhead and Aaron Diaz.
Friday
2.30-4.30pm - Eastside Jazz Club
Beyond Coltrane Symposium (admission free)
Join panel members Dr Trish Clowes, Dr John O'Gallagher, Piera Onacko and Professor Tony Whyton to explore the impact of John Coltrane's music on ideas of freedom, experimentalism, the avant-garde, composition, contemporary performance practices, fandom, and politics.
