Professor Josephs has a BSc (Hons) degree in Mathematics from University College London and MSc and DPhil degrees in Computer Science from the University of Oxford.

After spending a year as a Visiting Scientist at IBM Yorktown Heights in 1987, he returned to Oxford where he was appointed a member of the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences and a lecturer at Trinity College. He joined London South Bank University in 1993 and was promoted to Professor of Computing in 1998.

Between 1992 and 2006, he engaged with the Microelectronics Industry as the leader of an inter-organizational expert community of practice that was supported by the European Commission. He was appointed a Senior Fellow in Cyber Security at the University of Warwick, 2010-2012, and Professor of Computer Science at Birmingham City University in 2015.

He has served as a member of the UK Computing Research Committee since 2004, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council's Peer Review College since 2010 and the Innovate UK Assessor Pool and the BCS Fellows Technical Advisory Group since 2021.
