Clearing stories

At Birmingham City University, we’ve supported thousands of students through Clearing who’ve gone on to thrive, both personally and professionally.

Getting back on track

Elliot Hambleton, Mechanical Engineering with Foundation Year BEng (Hons)

“I didn’t get the A Level grades I expected, but I knew I still wanted to start university in September. I was really excited about university, and I didn’t want that excitement to fade. I gave BCU a call and they offered me a place on a foundation year. If you want to go to university, then don’t miss out on the second chance that Clearing gives you to be where you’re meant to be."

Choosing a new path

Nicholas Harfield, Learning Disability Nursing with Foundation Year BSc (Hons)

“I got an unconditional offer from a university that I really didn’t want to go to. So, I decided that going through Clearing would be a better option than going to a university I didn’t think was right for me. I think about my life if I’d never taken that chance on results day and called BCU. I love the freedom I have in my life living in Birmingham and the opportunities that have come my way."

Following a passion

Lauren Redfern, Media Production BA (Hons)

I originally went to a university outside of Birmingham to study acting. After one year, I knew it wasn't for me and I decided to drop out and apply to Media Production at BCU through Clearing. Thanks to my instinct telling me to follow my passion for media, I’m now on my way to becoming a successful Radio Presenter.”

Finding a better fit

Abigail Ward, Sociology BA (Hons)

“I had originally applied to universities further away from home but now wanted to stay local. BCU felt like the clear choice with the course I wanted and a great community. The Clearing team at BCU were friendly and everything was sorted out quickly. I felt so relieved after my phone call and excited to attend university!”

Seizing a second chance

Kimberly Gill, Diagnostic Radiography BSc (Hons)

“I was unsuccessful in getting a place at university in the main cycle and wasn’t really sure what to do next. When I found out about Clearing, I knew I’d been given a second chance to achieve my goals. Once I found out I had my place, I was on top of the world! Knowing I was starting university in less than a month was exciting.”
