STEAM Challenge Event: Future Homes Standard
STEAMhouse
Belmont Row B47RQ
Free to attend

The Future Homes Standard (FHS) is one of the biggest shifts in how homes will be built in decades. Subcontractors are key to making it happen.
This short, focused workshop is for subcontractors who want to understand the changes and help shape the support needed to deliver future-ready homes.
Agenda
- 08:00 – 09:00 - Understanding FHS: A clear breakdown of the Future Homes Standard and what’s changing – from technical requirements to site-level delivery.
- 09:00 – 11:00 - Interactive Session: Group-based discussion to explore subcontractor readiness, map challenges, and highlight where support, guidance or training is most needed.
Your insights will feed into a short report to share with government and key sector stakeholders.
What’s a STEAMhouse Challenge Event?
STEAM Challenge Events are in-person sessions that bring people together to tackle complex challenges. The goal is to share knowledge, build relationships and create better outcomes through collaboration.
What’s this one all about?
This session is about helping subcontractors get to grips with the Future Homes Standard – what it is, why it matters, and how it will change how we build.
You’ll get a clear overview of the changes, hear from key players, and take part in a hands-on session exploring:
- What people already know
- Where more support or training is needed
- What might get in the way of delivering well on site
It’s a chance to ask questions, share your view, and shape what better support looks like.
What is the Future Homes Standard (FHS)?
The FHS aims to ensure all new homes produce 75–80% fewer carbon emissions than those built under previous regulations. It’s part of the UK’s wider net zero goals and is already reshaping how housing projects are designed and delivered.
Key changes include:
- Improved insulation and airtightness
- Low-carbon heating systems (e.g. heat pumps, hot water storage, PV panels)
- Stronger ventilation standards
- Measures to prevent overheating
What does this mean for the construction industry?
- New training and skills across key trades
- Tighter regulations and coordination
- Upfront cost implications in materials, technology and labour
Who should attend?
We’re inviting subcontractors from the following core trades:
- Fabric/walling
- Groundworks
- Roofing
- Heating and ventilation
- PV installation
We also welcome Planners, Building Control, Site Managers and delivery partners who want to be part of the conversation.
