Launching in September 2019, our new BA (Hons) Sport Business Management is an exciting addition to our diverse course offering at Birmingham City Business School.

Following on from our successful introduction of BA (Hons) Events Management, GSM will allow you to learn what is needed from a modern manager in the sporting world, a sector that is becoming increasingly specialised. You’ll also study the fundamentals of management, giving you transferable skills to forge a management career in any sector.

But why should you choose to study Global Sport Management at Birmingham City University? We’ve put together 7 reasons why we think we’re the premier destination for aspiring sport managers.

Accreditation

Our course is the only undergraduate Sport Management degree of its kind in the UK to be CMI accredited. The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) is the only chartered professional body dedicated to promoting the highest standards in management and leadership excellence. This means the content of the course is up-to-date and relevant as possible, keeping you on-point with developments in the management sector.

The Global Element

Like other business sectors, sport and leisure is becoming an increasingly global marketplace. Ever major sporting league in the world is looking to increase its reach to other countries and continents – just look at the NFL’s yearly set of London games, and the big push of the Premier League into the previously untapped Asian markets.

That’s why we have put a heavy emphasis on looking at sport management in the global context. Our aim is to give you the skills to allow you to operate on any level, so your ambitions can be met no matter how grand your ideas. Modules such as “The Global Manager”, “Global Sports Law, Policy and CSR” and “Culture and Consumer Behaviour in Global Sports” will introduce you to these concepts alongside traditional management disciplines, showing you how what you are learning can be applied to all for corners of the globe.

The Commonwealth Games

Birmingham was recently announced as the host city for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Following successful games in Manchester in 2002 and Glasgow in 2014, it is now our turn to show the world what Birmingham can bring to the festivities.

The games will bring huge potential for jobs, voluntary and permanent, in the run up to the games in four years’ time, and students on the GSM course will have unparalleled access to the opportunities this will bring.

It is an exciting time for Birmingham, and the city will feel the benefits of hosting the event long after it has ended.

Employability

At the Birmingham City Business School, we don’t believe that business can be studied in isolation. So we have forged links with industry that can get you closer to the sporting venues and events in the city.

We are working closely with our in-house Faculty Employability Team to ensure you have the best placement opportunities open to you. We have excellent working relations with the Resorts World Arena, and Birmingham City University are the official University partner of Warwickshire County Cricket Club. Our students have already enjoyed placement opportunities there, through our sandwich placement year scheme.

Entrepreneurship

We want our students to know that we’re here to support them during their first steps into industry. Birmingham City Business School prides itself on encouraging students to start thinking about their careers from the moment they walk through the door.

That is why we’re excited to announce that there will be provisions made available that allow for students the opportunity to apply for an Enterprise grant to help encourage entrepreneurial activity. Got a great idea about something you’d like to try in the sport management sector? We’re here to help!

Contemporary

The global sport industry has seen unprecedented changes over the past decade, which is why it was so important to us to design GSM with the contemporary nature of the industry. This is vital to you when you come to graduate with contemporary skills that employers will be looking for, significantly improving your job prospects.

Leadership

You will be taught by our thought leaders with a clear passion to develop you as the future of the sport industry. We understand that your journey as a student sets the foundations for your career and therefore that is our main focus and priority.
