My placement as a healthcare administrator

Hajira, a Biomedical Science student, is currently undertaking a micro-placement in PBL Care as a Heathcare Administrator. Hajira is keen to understand her career path more and source as much experience as possible before finishing University.

Tell us about the application process?

Firstly, I found the role through emails from the Careers team as part of the BCU Placement scheme. I then completed the application form along with my cover letter and CV. Following this I was later called in for an interview which consisted of 10 questions, alongside a literacy and numeracy test. Ultimately, I then secured the role at PBL Care.

How did you prepare for the application process?

I prepared for the application by contacting the Careers team. They supported me by reviewing my CV and showing examples of what the ideal one should look like as a guide. They also highlighted what I needed to add/remove from my CV.

Furthermore, they helped me structure my cover letter as I was unsure what was needed within this. I don’t feel I would’ve secured the role if it wasn’t for their help with my cv and cover letter. Finally, I did some background research on the company before attending my interview.

Tell us about your placement at PBL Care?

As a Healthcare Administrator, my day typically consisted of scanning, filing and creating documents, as well as creating digital files of patients care plans. I think it has been very valuable as it has shown me an insight into working a 9-5 and has helped me decide the kind of role I want to undertake when I graduate, as I’ve got more experience. I have also been able to develop skills such as teamwork and using my own initiative as well as communication and IT skills.

What have been your top highlights?

I would say my highlights have been the entire experience; I really enjoyed having the chance to see ‘behind the scenes’ of a care company. I valued being able to see the work, you often don’t realise needs to be done and getting to know all the other employees in their roles in the office too.

What challenges did you face?

A challenge for me would have been starting work here. I often get very nervous in new situations with new people, but of course it needs to be done. Therefore, I think putting myself in situations like this really helps with my confidence too.

Any advice for students currently thinking about undertaking a placement?

My advice would be to just throw yourself in the deep end and do things you wouldn’t normally do. It will really help you to figure things out, especially if you’re unsure on what to continue with after university and get all the experience you can get. Ultimately, just have fun!
