Career options if you enjoy Sport

If you’re passionate about staying active, working in team environments, and helping others achieve their physical goals, a career in Sport and Life Sciences might be the perfect fit for you. Whether you're interested in coaching athletes, coaching sports teams, or using science to improve performance, there are plenty of exciting career paths to explore.

Sports Coach

If you enjoy motivating others and teaching techniques, a career as a sports coach or trainer could be ideal. Coaches work with athletes to enhance their skills, develop strategies, and build confidence. You could work with school teams, professional clubs, or even specialise in training elite athletes.

To excel in this role, you’ll need strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills, along with an in-depth knowledge of the sport you're coaching.

Our sport-related degrees offer practical coaching modules and industry placements with organisations such as Birchfield Harriers and Aston Villa, giving you the experience and confidence to lead in real-world sporting environments.

Personal Trainer

If helping individuals reach their fitness goals excites you, consider becoming a personal trainer or fitness instructor. You'll design personalised exercise programs and work closely with clients to guide them on their fitness journey.

Whether you’re working in a gym, health club, or as a freelance trainer, this career offers flexibility and variety. Success in this role requires a good understanding of anatomy and physiology, as well as strong motivational and interpersonal skills.

Our Sport and Life Sciences courses provide in-depth training through our biomechanics lab, numerous gyms, and nutrition lab, ideal for those looking to pursue a career in personal training.

Sports Psychologist

If you’re interested in understanding the mental side of performance, becoming a sports psychologist is a rewarding option. Sports psychologists work with athletes to develop mental resilience, manage stress, and enhance focus during competitions.

You’ll apply psychological techniques to help athletes maintain motivation, overcome anxiety, and develop a winning mindset. This role requires analytical thinking, empathy, and the ability to apply psychological principles in high-pressure situations.

Our Sports and Exercise Science course considers aspects such as physiology, psychology and biomechanics and how they can be applied to physical activity and wellbeing. A unique aspect of the course is its focus on the psychological factors of sport and exercise as well as the physical and biological aspects.

You’ll also get the chance to partake in a sandwich placement year. Past students have undertaken placements at places such as Birmingham City Football Club, Shrewsbury Town FC, Warwickshire County Cricket Club and more.

Physiotherapist

If you're interested in injury prevention and rehabilitation, a career as a sports physiotherapist could be for you. Physiotherapists assess, diagnose, and treat sports injuries, helping athletes recover and return to peak performance.

You’ll work with athletes, coaches, and medical professionals to design personalised rehabilitation programs. Strong knowledge of anatomy, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to supporting athletes through recovery are essential for success in this role.

You’ll also have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge in key areas such as anatomy, human movement, and clinical assessment through our state-of-the-art facilities at Alexander Stadium, providing you with a strong foundation for postgraduate physiotherapy training.

Sports Journalist

If you have a knack for storytelling and a passion for sport, becoming a sports journalist or broadcaster could be an exciting path. You’ll cover live games, interview athletes, and provide analysis of key sporting events.

Sports journalists work for newspapers, magazines, TV stations, and online platforms, while broadcasters offer live commentary and insights during matches. This career requires strong communication skills, creativity, and an in-depth knowledge of the sport you're covering.

Our Sports Journalism course gives you those skills and more, through hands‑on experience with multi‑platform reporting, real‑world projects, guest lectures from industry professionals, and optional placement opportunities.

Sports Business Management

If you're interested in the operations and management side of sport, a career in sports business could be ideal. There's a plethora of careers to choose from, such as sports organisation manager, overseeing the planning and delivery of competitions, events, or community programmes. Alternatively, you could become a sports agent, managing athlete representation, contracts, and sponsorship deals, a very lucrative and highly rewarding path to those who flourish.

There are also opportunities in sports venue management, where you'd be responsible for coordinating events, maintaining facilities, and ensuring a great experience for fans and athletes alike.

To thrive in this field, you’ll need strong organisational and communication skills, commercial awareness, and a solid understanding of how the sports industry functions behind the scenes.

Our Sports Business Management degree combines industry-relevant theory on marketing, digital innovation, operations, analytics, and event management with practical, real-world opportunities like live projects and optional professional placements. Previous students have secured placements with organisations such as Sky and Solihull Moors Football Club, gaining valuable insight into the inner workings of the sports industry.
