International Relations and Security student, Narzas, tells us about her time studying the course, how it's shaped her life and how she balanced being a mother with studying.
Studying International Relations and Security at Birmingham City University has been a rewarding experience. It has helped me build my confidence, develop my academic skills and understand the kind of career I want to pursue in the future.
As an international student and a mother, university life was not always easy at first. I was adjusting to studying in the UK, improving my academic English and balancing my family responsibilities alongside my studies. It took commitment, organisation and determination, especially in the beginning.
BCU gave me the support I needed to keep going
The tutors were welcoming and supportive, and the university environment helped me feel more confident in myself and my abilities. I made an effort to visit the library as often as I could each week, as it helped me stay focused and feel part of university life.
I was fully committed to learning and did not miss any lectures. Every module felt important to me, so I attended all of my lectures and seminars. That commitment helped me stay motivated and get the most out of my course.
Connecting my studies to real-world experience
While studying International Relations and Security, I also gained experience working as an interpreter, supporting patients in hospitals, during mental health visits, in people’s homes and within the wider community.
I interpreted between Arabic and English, often supporting vulnerable individuals and refugees. Some of these experiences were challenging, but they helped me understand that I was on the right path.
The work showed me how closely my course, my background and my future goals are connected. Studying International Relations and Security gave me a stronger understanding of global issues, human rights, conflict, security and the experiences of people affected by displacement and vulnerability.
It also helped me see how my language skills could support meaningful work in the future.

Support that made a difference
One of the most valuable parts of my time at BCU has been the support I received from my tutors. My tutor was extremely helpful and supported me with strong references for different jobs and applications. This made a real difference and helped me access new opportunities. That support gave me confidence when applying for roles and helped me take the next steps in my career.
Working alongside my studies
I currently work for Word360 and Language Empire as an Arabic and English interpreter.
The role is not as easy as it may sound. It comes with responsibilities around bookings, studies, assignments and personal commitments. But the flexibility of the job has allowed me to continue my education while gaining experience in an area that matters to me.
It has also helped me understand the kind of work I want to do in the future.
Looking ahead
My course, my background and my goals are closely linked. In the future, I want to work in organisations connected to human rights, refugees and vulnerable communities. I hope to combine my language skills, my lived experience and what I have learned through my studies to build a career where I can support others.
Studying International Relations and Security at BCU has helped me grow academically, personally and professionally. It has shown me that with the right support, commitment and purpose, it is possible to keep moving forward, even when the journey is not easy.
