Architecture and spatial practice have long favoured the visual, leaving smell one of the least explored dimensions of how we design and experience space. This interdisciplinary exhibition explores how smell shapes our experience of architecture and landscape, and asks how architects and designers can design with smell to create positive experiences.
Bringing together historical precedents, contemporary architectural research and artistic practice from different countries, the exhibition shows how olfactory design can support health and wellbeing and enrich the way we experience places.
The exhibition is organised in four sections: Visualising Scents, Smell-Spatial Narratives, Materialising Scents and Smellscape Ecology. Visitors are invited to touch, smell and interact with the work on display. Designed as a multi-sensory experience, the exhibition opens up emerging research and debate on smell, wellbeing and the built environment, inviting everyone to rediscover space through the nose.
