Russell Good is a Senior Lecturer in Landscape Architecture, Deputy Course Director of MA Landscape Architecture; a landscape architect, graphic designer and keen mountain biker.
Russell’s research explores ecological and hydrological systems in the context of climate change, in order to inform and develop new aesthetic codes in landscape design.
Using the ecological opportunities presented by the urban River Rea in Digbeth, Birmingham as a laboratory, he is examining how ecological processes can be used as a device in place making — to enhance biodiversity and draw upon the richness of new layers of animal and plant life to provide a living dynamic that informs our sensory perception of place. Driven from a design perspective, the research expands conventional boundaries of ecology as a discipline.
The River Severn, and its flood plains around Shrewsbury is the site of student led projects investigating the hypothesis that flooding used can be used as innovative design tool, a devise to create a fascinating range of new landscapes and habitats through landscape management and concept led design in a way that challenges the traditional approaches employed by conventional flood control engineering.
