Project title: (Branch)(Shelf)
Can you tell us a little more about your project? What was the inspiration behind it?
The (Branch) (Shelf) is made for the RSA Branching Out brief. The brief involves raising the profile for woodland forests and using the thinnings produced from managing the forest. In particular it focuses on broadleaf woodland. Using the thinnings was the main inspiration and driving force behind the project, this also happened to be the most exhausting and taxing part. Creating a shelf with the branches at the forefront of the design makes the home feel closer to nature through the look and smell hence inspiring people to visit the local forests. To motivate people further, included in the design is space for an extra branch which is handpicked by the buyer when they visit the woodland themselves which they attach themselves at home.
How important is being able to exhibit externally?
The chance to get my work out to into the public eye will be a great privilege and an opportunity that I don’t want to pass up. Receiving critiques and speaking to design professionals will boost my confidence no end and hopefully give me a steppingstone for my future career in the industry.
What has your highlight of the course been so far?
The highlight of the course so far has been surviving it and making it this far. The support I have received from all the tutors has not only helped me progress as a designer but helped shaped me as a person. Compared to the start I am a lot more confident with myself as well as my future goals.
Could you tell us a little more about your design interests?
Mainly my design interests relate to contract furniture and common mass-produced items that you see around restaurants, offices and other social spaces made for businesses. Mostly because one day I want to own a company that produces this type of furniture and to make a lot of money.
What advice would you give to someone considering studying Product and Furniture Design at BCU?
If you are passionate about design and are willing to put the hours and hard work in, I couldn’t recommend it more. The course requires a lot of hard work and passion but when you put them in the results are worth it.
