Rachel James is a Lecturer in the Department of Adult Nursing at Birmingham City University, where she primarily teaches first-year students on the BSc/MSci Nursing degree course. She is a co-convenor for the NUR4033 – Providing and Evaluating Care module and also facilitates clinical skills sessions within the University’s simulation and skills suites.

A proud alumna of Birmingham City University, Rachel completed both her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the institution. She graduated with a First Class BSc (Hons) in Adult Nursing in 2016 and subsequently completed the Adult Critical Care Course in 2018, earning a Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice – Adult Critical Care with Merit. She also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education, awarded with Distinction.

Rachel is deeply passionate about nurse education and pastoral support. She is particularly committed to reducing the attainment gap and fostering an inclusive learning environment where every student feels supported and empowered to achieve their full potential. Her teaching philosophy is grounded in compassion, equity, and clinical excellence.

Since qualifying, Rachel has specialised in Critical Care Nursing, gaining extensive experience across Liver & General, Trauma, and Neuro Intensive Care Units. She has worked in both Birmingham and Brighton, contributing to high-acuity care in leading Critical Care settings.

Her professional interests include Critical Care Nursing, Tracheostomy Care, Respiratory, Liver Critical Care Nursing, Nurse Education, and providing pastoral care to students.
