Dr Aisel Omarova
Aisel is a legal researcher and policy-oriented academic with expertise in international law, human rights, and legal reform, combining research, teaching, and policy engagement in post-conflict governance. Holding a PhD in Law and working as Senior Lecturer at Birmingham City University, Associate Professor at Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University, and Honorary Associate Professor at Warwick Law School, as well as an accredited mediator, she brings a hybrid profile that bridges academic research, legal practice, and policy engagement.
Her research and advisory work focuses on children’s rights, legal reconstruction after conflict, the right to identity, and questions of sovereignty and legal development in the post-Soviet space. She has led and contributed to projects funded by the British Academy, CARA, and UKRI, and has delivered expert briefings to UK policymakers and parliament-related forums on child protection during war, state responsibility, and transitional justice.
Alongside her research, Aisel is actively engaged in academic community building and teaching innovation. She co-established and co-led the Warwick Law School Teaching Network, which supports colleagues in developing teaching practice and applying for Senior HE Fellowships, and regularly hosts internal and external speakers delivering workshops on pedagogy and curriculum innovation. She has also co-organised a number of academic events and research dialogues, including the colloquium “Thinking Gender, History, and International Law” (12–13 June 2025), the online seminar series “Thinking Gender, History, and International Law” (2024–2025), and the roundtable “The Russia-Ukraine War and the Frontiers of Law” (14 November 2023).
Aisel is fluent in six languages and experienced in high-stakes international environments. She brings strategic insight, governance expertise, and strong legal drafting skills to academic, policy, and interdisciplinary collaborations.
