Course Leader

Welcome Message
Welcome to the BA (Hons) Secondary Physical Education with QTS course, we are looking forward to working with you as your start your journey into the teaching and PE world! This is an exciting time to embark on a career in teaching PE and our course will provide you with the knowledge, confidence and experience to provide high quality PE in Secondary Schools across a range of education contexts.
During induction week you will meet the course team, learn about your course and module diet for your first year and have opportunity to meet your peers. There are a mixture of theory and practical activities timetabled, so you will be able to familiarise yourself with our City Centre Campus and the practical facilities in Perry Barr.
Over the three years, you will develop your subject knowledge across a wide range of activities that are typically delivered on curriculums across the country, along with alternative and emerging activities, widening your confidence and experience, offering a contemporary curriculum delivery to your pupils. You will explore teaching and learning approaches and develop a critical understanding of pedagogical practices that you will take into your teaching practice.
As part of your teacher training, you will have two contrasting school placements, in Year 2 and Year 3 of the course. Here you will begin to apply all of the learning that has taken place on the course to date and start implementing that within your teaching practice. You will be supported by school mentors and your university course team along the way!
We look forward to seeing you in September!
Course Location
Your course will be taught across the following locations:
Alexander Stadium and the Doug Ellis Sports Centre (both in Perry Barr), and Benjamin Zephaniah Building (formerly University House), at the City Centre Campus.
First day on Campus
We look forward to welcoming you to Birmingham City University!
You must have your ID card visible at all times when on campus, so if you have received yours before your first day, ensure you bring this with you. If you enrolled late you will need to collect one on campus during your first few days. Please remember that your ID card is for your use only. You must never let anyone else use it.
To complete your enrolment, you will need the following:
- Passport (or other form of photo ID if you are a UK/EU student)
- Original qualification documents if applicable (you will be emailed a list of the documents we need to see once you have completed your online enrolment)
- Visa (international students only)
What else? The rest is up to you! You will find a shop, café, pub, computer access and water fountains on campus, but we do recommend you bring the following on the first day:
- Laptop, if you have one
- Notepad and pen
- Reusable water bottle
- Snack
- Money
And remember, the weather in Birmingham can be changeable!
