Welcome Message

Welcome to Early Childhood Studies BA (Hons) - we can't wait to welcome you in September!

Your journey with us begins with Induction Week (w/c 14 September), and we would really encourage you to make the most of it. It's an important aspect part of starting university life, giving you the chance to meet your fellow students and your course staff team, get familiar with the campus, and prepare yourselves for the months and years ahead. Also, don't miss the Students' Union Fairs on 15–16 September at our City Centre campus - where you can explore the various clubs, societies and activities that student life has to offer.

In your first semester, you'll be studying The Developing Child, Preparing to Study in Higher Education, and Children and Families - modules designed to ease you into higher education and set you up for success. There are no exams here - learning on this course is discursive and built around interaction with your peers and their ideas. You won't be expected to face any of this alone; each of you will be allocated a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT), who will be with you every step of the way as you settle in.

We can't wait to meet you. Welcome to BCU!

Course Location

Benjamin Zephaniah Building Level 2 classroom

Your course will be mainly taught in buildings at the City Centre Campus, particularly Benjamin Zephaniah Building (formerly University House), although you may occasionally have classes at City South Campus in Edgbaston.

First day on Campus

We look forward to welcoming you to Birmingham City University!

You must have your ID card visible at all times when on campus, so if you have received yours before your first day, ensure you bring this with you. If you enrolled late you will need to collect one on campus during your first few days. Please remember that your ID card is for your use only. You must never let anyone else use it.

To complete your enrolment, you will need the following:

  • Passport (or other form of photo ID if you are a UK/EU student)
  • Original qualification documents if applicable (you will be emailed a list of the documents we need to see once you have completed your online enrolment)
  • Visa (international students only)

What else? The rest is up to you! You will find a shop, café, pub, computer access and water fountains on campus, but we do recommend you bring the following on the first day:

  • Laptop, if you have one
  • Notepad and pen
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Snack
  • Money

And remember, the weather in Birmingham can be changeable!
