Welcome Message

Welcome to the BEng Civil Engineering course in the School of Architecture, Built Environment, Computing and Engineering within the Department of Architecture and the Built Environment at Birmingham City University.

As Course Leader, and on behalf of the Civil Engineering team, I would like to warmly welcome you to the course. We are delighted that you will be joining us and hope you are excited to begin your studies and take advantage of the many learning and development opportunities ahead.

You are strongly encouraged to attend our Induction Week commencing on 14 September, where you will have the opportunity to meet staff and fellow students, familiarise yourself with the campus and facilities, and learn more about the course and university support services available to you. You can also attend the Students’ Union Fairs on 15 September at City South Campus and 16–17 September at the City Centre Campus to explore student societies, activities, and support networks.

We understand that starting university can feel both exciting and challenging, and we are committed to supporting you throughout your studies. You will have access to academic and pastoral support from your personal tutor, module teams, and wider student support services to help you settle into university life confidently.

In your first semester, you will study core civil engineering subjects including structural analysis, soil and construction materials, engineering mathematics, and sustainable engineering practices. You may also take part in site visits, laboratory sessions, and industry-focused activities that connect your learning to professional practice.

Throughout the course, you will strengthen your analytical and technical skills through hands-on experience using state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, helping you prepare for a successful career in the civil engineering industry.

We look forward to supporting you throughout your studies and wish you every success in your academic journey.

First day on Campus

We look forward to welcoming you to Birmingham City University!

You must have your ID card visible at all times when on campus, so if you have received yours before your first day, ensure you bring this with you. If you enrolled late you will need to collect one on campus during your first few days. Please remember that your ID card is for your use only. You must never let anyone else use it.

To complete your enrolment, you will need the following:

  • Passport (or other form of photo ID if you are a UK/EU student)
  • Original qualification documents if applicable (you will be emailed a list of the documents we need to see once you have completed your online enrolment)
  • Visa (international students only)

What else? The rest is up to you! You will find a shop, café, pub, computer access and water fountains on campus, but we do recommend you bring the following on the first day:

  • Laptop, if you have one
  • Notepad and pen
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Snack
  • Money

And remember, the weather in Birmingham can be changeable!
