Welcome Message

Welcome to the BSc (Hons) Building Surveying Top-up course. On behalf of the BSc Building Surveying team, we welcome you to the next stage of your academic and professional journey. Whether you are returning to study after time in industry or progressing from previous qualifications, we are delighted that you have chosen to join us.

As a top-up student, you bring knowledge and experience from your prior studies and, in some cases, from industry. This final year builds on those foundations to develop the advanced technical, professional, and analytical skills required in the building surveying profession.

During the course, you will study a range of topics, including building pathology, surveying practice, professional responsibilities, sustainability, project management, and research skills. You will be encouraged to apply your knowledge to real-world challenges, develop independent thinking, and strengthen the skills needed for professional practice and future chartership.

Our teaching is supported by our collaboration with professional bodies and employers. Through lectures, seminars, guest speakers from industry, and live projects with clients, you will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing the built environment sector.

Most importantly, we want you to feel part of our Building Surveying community. We encourage you to engage fully with your studies, make the most of the opportunities available to you, and work closely with your fellow students and staff.

We look forward to meeting you and wish you every success on your journey ahead.

To complete your enrolment, you will need the following:

  • Passport (or other form of photo ID if you are a UK/EU student)
  • Original qualification documents if applicable (you will be emailed a list of the documents we need to see once you have completed your online enrolment)
  • Visa (international students only)

What else? The rest is up to you! You will find a shop, café, pub, computer access and water fountains on campus, but we do recommend you bring the following on the first day:

  • Laptop, if you have one
  • Notepad and pen
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Snack
  • Money

And remember, the weather in Birmingham can be changeable!
