Zhiyu Geng

BA Jewellery and Objects

From a very early age, Zhiyu was interested in sparkling gems and jewellery. After devoting herself to studying jewellery design in high school, she wanted to attend the top university to continue her education.

“I chose to go to university in Birmingham UK, after careful consideration. Through my research, I found that the UK is a secure option, and that Birmingham City University has the world’s top jewellery design school, so I didn’t hesitate to make it my top choice.

“The safety of the country and region where the school is located was the most important factor for me and my family. We also considered the teaching style, and the costs of life and studying before we chose BCU.

“When I first came to the UK to study, I found that the teaching and learning methods were very different from those in China. My teachers encouraged me not to be afraid if my ideas are not the same as others', because everyone’s path and way of thinking is different. They taught me the importance of expressing my own ideas through my work. With their encouragement, I developed more confidence to experiment and try new methods on my own.

“Birmingham City University has provided me with specialist learning facilities and engaging teaching, which has developed my jewellery skills and knowledge. My teachers also help me with any other advice and support I need.

“Living in Birmingham has been really fun. I live in a studio room, which suits me because it’s quiet and I can keep it clean. I live close to the city centre, so it’s convenient for food shopping. I’ve also made many good friends in the social spaces at my accommodation.

“I love making things by hand, so the practical side of learning is not a challenge. Adapting to the language and local culture took some time, but I overcame this in my first year.

“I have classmates who are also from China and other international students. Communicating with all the different students at BCU enriches my life in this country, as well as my studies.

“I believe my strength, the effort I put in and the results I achieve are valued at BCU. I get along well with my classmates, and I am always willing to help them with their questions. My proudest moment was when a piece of work I created was chosen for exhibition.

“In the future, I want to become a teacher or open a studio to continue making my own jewellery.

“To me, to be a Beyonder means constantly breaking through the limits, developing and becoming more creative in jewellery design.”
