Fu Jing Hee

MA Media Production

Fu Jing has always had a goal of working in the film and media industry. After receiving advice from a tutor at his college, and thanks to a partnership which offered the opportunity to study at Birmingham City University, he decided to take the chance.

“I chose BCU because it has one of the best offers for what I want to study. They have a partnership with my former college that allows Diploma students to go straight to a Master’s at BCU. As it would just be a year of study and the fee was reasonable, I took the opportunity to study in the UK. Studying abroad was always a dream of mine. I wanted to experience a different environment and culture and I love to explore.

“For me, the course was the most important factor for choosing a university. Then, affordability with course fees and living expenses.

“The language barrier has been my biggest challenge. It takes time to get used to and every day I’m still learning. The best way to get over this is by getting yourself out there to speak more. I push myself to talk more to my classmates and lecturers so I can improve.

“I’ve fitted into the community at BCU by meeting other Malaysian students as well as people with the same interests. I’ve made friends through my course, playing badminton and music. The best way to feel welcome in a new environment is to do things you’re interested in, from there you’ll find a new community to join.

“Since studying at BCU I’ve become more empathetic. Meeting people from different cultural backgrounds and life experiences has taught me to understand different perspectives. I’ve also become more independent as I have to calculate my expenses, plan my meals and research where is cheapest to shop.

“My favourite thing about being a student at BCU is the cheap food, and great facilities. The food is super affordable for students, and hires and loans let you try out all kinds of camera gear. If you’re working in this field, it’s paradise. As a music enthusiast it’s also great to have the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and their music library.

“I get to work on doing what I love and am motivated to create the perfect piece. I create documentaries, and each one feels like a mission. I travel alone with my equipment, shoot and do the interviews all by myself. The results are so rewarding, they improve my skills, benefit communities, and most importantly, they serve a purpose which makes me feel proud.

“Coming to the UK to study is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, don’t miss an opportunity to do it if you can.”
