Letter to My Younger Self (online)
Dates: (1st week of June) Tuesday 3rd June or Wednesday 4th June
Start time: 1pm / 2pm / 2:30pm
Duration: 1 hour and 30 mins
Location: Online
Event Brief
An intimate online session centred around writing a letter to one’s younger self, reflecting on moments of exclusion, isolation, or feeling left behind. Participants will be gently guided and may choose to share or write for themselves. By writing letters to their younger selves, participants are invited to explore moments when they felt left out, whether in childhood, education, community, or academia, and offer their past selves the kindness, wisdom, or affirmation they may not have received at the time.
The aim is to create a safe and reflective online space where participants can explore past experiences of exclusion through letter writing. This event encourages healing, shared vulnerability, and connection by giving voice to stories that are often left untold.
We can publish the work in an online journal or blog if people are comfortable.
Life Mapping
Dates: (Last week of June) Tuesday 24th June, Wednesday 25th June, or Thursday 26th June
Start time: 10:30am / 11am
Duration: 2 hours
Buffet and Networking: 12pm / 12:30pm
Location: Room in Curzon or Parkside
Event Brief
Participants will reflect on and visually represent their personal, academic, or emotional journeys using creative materials like drawing, collage, or symbolic imagery. This can focus on their academic journey or life as a whole. Life Mapping is a qualitative narrative visual method that involves following a person’s life over a specified time period, from a point in the past to the present day.
By mapping their experiences, participants are encouraged to pause and examine their journey, including challenges faced, turning points, and moments of growth. The process of visual storytelling allows for non-verbal self-expression, making it especially meaningful for those who may find it difficult to articulate their experiences through words.
Sharing these maps with others (if they choose to) invites empathy, connection, and peer bonding. It reveals the often-overlooked commonalities that unite Global Majority PGRs across disciplines and backgrounds. The event encourages self-reflection and peer bonding through visual storytelling, fostering belonging, understanding, and a sense of shared strength.
Cultural Exchange Event
Dates: (3rd week of July) Tuesday 15th July or Wednesday 16th July
Start time: Afternoon, 12pm (possible WhatsApp and email poll for availability)
Duration: 3 hours
Location: Parkside rooftop garden, Steamhouse, or a room at Curzon
Event Brief
A celebration of culture through
Food (sharing traditional dishes or stories around food)
Skills sharing (sewing, calligraphy, henna, crafts)
Open mic (poetry, storytelling, short musical acts)
The aim is to build connections through culture, joy, and creativity in a warm, informal setting. Whether it’s a home-cooked meal, a sewing technique, or a poem in a mother tongue, the event offers space for PGRs to bring their full selves, beyond the academic persona, and find common ground through cultural pride and lived experience.
The purpose is to reduce isolation and create a welcoming environment where belonging is felt, not just spoken about.
The Warmth We Carry: Food & Cultural Festival
We are delighted to invite you to The Warmth We Carry: Food & Cultural Festival, a celebration of togetherness, traditions, and the shared spirit of the season, wherever you call home.
This gathering welcomes Global Majority PGRs from Birmingham City University and the University of Wolverhampton to come together in a cosy, inclusive space that honours our diverse celebrations, including Christmas, Yalda, Pongal, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Thanksgiving, Diwali, Bodhi Day, and more.
Whether your season is filled with sunshine or snow, this is your space to share how warmth, food, and community bring meaning to this time of year.
