For the past twelve years, Karl has worked full time as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, cover supervisor and music and RE teacher in a primary school. His wider roles as a school governor and lead for the School's Council have given him the experience in strategic project management.

Karl has a First Class degree in History and an MA in Victorian Studies at Distinction level. He has been involved with Birmingham's heritage sector through voluntary work at the National Trust's Back to Back houses and worked as a musician for Birmingham Museum's Trust. This work provided opportunities for public engagement and outreach within this sector.

Karl has a keen academic interest in nineteenth century culture, particularly Pre-Raphaelitism, The Victorian Gothic, the Arts and Crafts movement and Aestheticism. This was developed through a broader interest in Romanticism, poetry and art. He is also an active member on Birmingham's folk and traditional music circuit, having been a performing musician for many years. He is a multi-talented musician and can play a variety of instruments including: guitar, banjo, dulcimer, melodeon and the concertina.
