Project Aims
The aim of this project is to develop a theory-based instrument to identify barriers and facilitators to optimal management of sedation in the Intensive Care Unit
Mechanically ventilated patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) receive sedation and analgesia to manage discomfort. Despite evidence to support a goal of sedation minimisation to achieve optimal patient outcomes, many patients remain deeply sedated. Our work seeks to establish the challenges to optimising sedation though qualitative interviews with healthcare practitioners. Interviews will inform the design and testing of a valid and reliable instrument and a nationwide survey.
