Simon is a sport social scientist, drawing on his background in human geography and mobility studies to better understand sport, exercise, physical culture, active travel, and transport in everyday life.

His research concerns everyday active practices, how they change, and what that tells us about society, spaces, cultures and bodies. At BCU, Simon is Director of the Physical Activity, Society and Environment (PHASE) Research Group. His work contributes to the development of new interdisciplinary fields on sport mobilities and running studies.

Simon is currently undertaking research into:

  • Run-commuting
  • Long-distance walking
  • Running with a bag
  • Junior parkrun and intergenerational physical activity
  • Post-collision cycling practices
  • Alternative active travel
  • Sport mobilities

Public engagement is also an important part of Simon’s academic practice, in which he seeks to communicate and share his research with relevant organisations and the wider public in order to improve, educate and entertain.

At BCU, Simon teaches qualitative, social, cultural and spatial perspectives on sport across our undergraduate sport courses. He also specialises in researcher development, supporting postgraduate students, new-to-academia staff, and early career researchers with their work, writing and publications. Simon leads postgraduate modules on Writing for Academic Publication and Becoming an Impactful Researcher.
