The exhibition, A time and a place, celebrates Birmingham’s vibrant community. It is a snapshot of the people that live in the city; the lives they live, the roles that they fulfil and the journeys that they travel. Photographs on display vary from live dance events and street scenes at festivals and events in Birmingham to images documenting the effects of austerity measures.

The latter is work from BA (Hons) Photography Lecturer Timm Sonnenschein, who worked with photographic technicians within the Arts, Design and Media Faculty and the University’s Events and Exhibitions team to put the exhibition together. In addition to submitting his own work he, alongside other members of staff within the School, were asked to put forward promising students whose work would fit with the exhibition theme.

Luca Crawford Bailey and Alicia Knight were two of the BA (Hons) Photography students chosen to exhibit their work. Luca’s black and white photographs focus on performances at Birmingham’s iconic music venues (see main image), while Alicia’s vibrant images showcase Birmingham as a Festival City (see below left). Her images were a mixture of project work and images from Birmingham Weekender which was an extra-curricular activity. Speaking about the opportunity to present her work Alicia said:

BA (Hons) Photography lecturer Paul Lander noted that the new exhibition space will be of great benefit to students as it will inspire them to think more of the value of exhibiting their work and promote their visual signature. He explained that obtaining the opportunity for students to expose their work at such an early stage in life is key to their artistic development and a great opportunity to raise confidence, heighten their profile and ready them for the future beyond university life. Paul added:

The exhibition will be on show until January and if you would like to find out more about the photographers and their exciting work you can visit the Parkside Platform page.
