To mark International Women’s Day on 8 March, Birmingham City University will play host to a week of events raising awareness of gender inequality and celebrating the achievements of women.

Organised by Dr Charlotte Barlow, lecturer in Criminology at the University, events include an exclusive film screening of ‘He Named Me Malala’ and a student-led art project which invites women to anonymously submit their reflections and experiences of sexism in everyday life.

“The events are open to the public as well as our staff and students. We’ll be using the anonymous ‘Everyday Sexism’ submissions afterwards in an exhibition, to see and share what prejudices and challenges women in our community may have encountered.

“Gender equality is high on Birmingham City University’s agenda, having recently launched a new gender research cluster group and working towards an Athena SWAN accreditation, recognising our commitment to advancing the careers of women in academia”, added Dr Barlow.

Other events taking place throughout the week 7 – 11 March include a psychology workshop on the guilt that women face when leaving children to head to the workplace and a photo project exploring the lives and experiences of women who live and work in the Eastside area of Birmingham.

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
