A former pupil St Thomas Aquinas Catholic School, Kings Norton has won an award for student excellence.
Adams (30) from Longbridge, is the joint winner of the Student of Excellence - BSc (Hons) Midwifery from Birmingham City University’s Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences. She received her award at a prize-giving ceremony on Friday 22 July at the Botanical Gardens, Edgbaston. where the guest speaker was Barbara Kuypers, West Midlands Local Supervising Authority Midwifery Officer.
always knew she didn’t want to work in an office, and it was while doing bar work in Tenerife that she made up her mind that she was going to enter nursing. When she returned home to Birmingham she applied to study the Diploma in Nursing at the Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences at Birmingham City University.
Although she enjoyed nursing she had always wanted to move into midwifery so applied for the short course run at the Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences and was accepted. persistence and hard work paid off and she gained the joint top mark on her course.
said: “The Faculty is a nice environment to learn in. I had my practice placements at City Hospital and that’s where I’ve got a new job as a midwife.
“I’m really looking forward to starting my new role and the course definitely helped me secure the job.”
mother, Karen Adams, attended the awards ceremony with and said: “I’m really proud of her but I knew she would do well because she applies herself - both juggling her finances and work – proves that what you put in is what you get out.”
Professor Ian Blair, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences said: “This is the fifth year that the Health and Social Care Awards have been held, and this year the selection process has been more difficult than ever.
“The awards were created to provide formal recognition of the excellent efforts and achievements of our outstanding students, and to celebrate the relationships the Faculty has built with our practice partners.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate all our award winners and wish them the very best for the future.”
