Senior Lecturer in Health, Education and Life Sciences Major Chris Carter has received special recognition from the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust for his work during the Covid-19 pandemic, after being nominated by colleagues.

The Trust recently ran a campaign inviting staff to nominate colleagues who they felt should receive special recognition for their efforts and significant contribution over the past few months.

Nominees were awarded specially-designed enamel pins to wear with pride on their lanyard, as well as certificates as a permanent record of their achievements that included some of the kind words sent in by nominees.

The Trust also held two events for nominees to collect these and enjoy some refreshments.

Earlier this year, Chris was seconded from his role at BCU to be the second Matron for Critical Care at University Hospital Lewisham in London during the Covid-19 pandemic, for a period of three months. Chris, who trained at University Hospital Lewisham – now Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust – started his secondment on 20 April.

Feedback from Chris’ colleagues included: “Matron Chris was effortlessly supportive in ensuring redeployed staff were upskilled promptly for their placement in ICU. He ensured our wellbeing was protected. During the Covid-19 peak, matron was always available to talk and/or listen. This made my redeployment so much less stressful, knowing all staff were a team and a "family".”

Other feedback included: “Although I am on the doctor’s side of things, I am aware of how hard Chris worked during the pandemic, both clinically and also on the education and management side. He organised many teaching days for redeployed nurses, as well as a session that redeployed doctors and medical students attended as well. He played a pivotal role in the ICU effort against Covid during the peak of the pandemic.”
