A collaborative recording project starring singer-songwriter and YouTube personality Mary Spender and recorded at Birmingham City University’s Royal Birmingham Conservatoire has been released - and is chalking up views across the globe.
The Great Wave, one of the final projects for the Conservatoire’s Music Technology team before the first set of national restrictions came into force, is a song and music video featuring Universal Audio producer and alumnus Tom Waterman, and musician and influencer Mary Spender – who has over 500,000 subscribers on YouTube.
Tom and Mary worked with BSc, BMus and MMus Music Technology students, along with Royer Microphones’ Adam Crowe, RBC’s Head of Music Technology Simon Hall, Assistant Head of Music Technology Ben Markland, and Assistant Head of Strings Nick Stringfellow to record and produce the track in the cutting-edge recording suite at the Birmingham music institution.
After nearly two years in postproduction, Mary has officially released the single and video on streaming platforms, clocking up tens of thousands of plays and views in just one week.
A first reaction playthrough video with Youtube legends Rick Beato and guitarist Rhett Shull has also seen over 100,000 plays.
Dr Simon Hall, Interim Vice-Principal and Head of Music Technology at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, said, “This is a great showcase and example of how the Music Technology department in RBC works.
“There aren’t many places in the world where you can do this, and we’re delighted that we could facilitate this and provide an inspirational experience for current students.”
